Create: Shokugeki No Soma (Food Wars!) Wig Tutorial

Hi everyone! Today I will be showing you how to make an anime-inspired wig with large spikes. Specifically, I will be showing pictures of my Shokugeki No Soma (Food Wars!) Soma wig.

The things you will need are:

  •          Wig
  •          Hair elastics
  •          Fabric glue
  •          Got2B Blasting Freeze Spray
  •          Extra wefts as needed (I used wefts for sideburns)
  •          Wig lace or mesh for sideburns
I absolutely love making props and working on costumes, and I hope you will too! Now that we have covered what you will need let’s start going through the steps. Without further ado, let’s get started!

Step One: Separating your wig

The first step to making your wig is to separate out the hair into the chunks you will later make the spikes out of. To do this, I took reference images of my character from multiple angles and separated the wig into chunks using some hair elastics. After your whole wig is separated its time to move onto the other details of the wig. This wig has sideburns so I will explain how I made those.

Step Two: Creating the sideburns and sewing them in

Start by taking some very fine mesh close to your skin tone. I used the type like what you find on a figure skating outfit (the flesh-toned fine mesh) and cutting them into sideburn shapes. The shape I made basically looked like a triangle with the acute side cut squarely. Now it is time to sew on the wefts. I started by cutting the sideburn wefts to about 1mm for starters. This makes the wefts long enough for me to have a little leeway once I style it later.

Next, I started to hand sew my wefts onto the mesh. To sew on wefts, you will want to use the sewing holding together the wefts to secure the weft to the mesh. If you look on the inside of your wig, you can see the cap has the wefts attached in a similar fashion. Sew the wefts on in the way that the hair would naturally grow. This does depend on the character. Souma has very normal sideburns, so I made them taper smaller. After you have all the wefts sewn on it is time to style them. I cut mine a bit shorter, so they looked more realistic.

After the sideburns are styled, It is time to sew them on. Wigs typically have pieces near the ear where the hair dips in a way to more simulate a natural hairline. At this point, line up the sideburns with the pieces next to the ear and pin them on carefully. After this, hand sew the sideburn to the wig.

Step Three: Styling the spikes

Now it is time to style your wig. Start by picking a spike and taking the elastic off. Put some fabric glue into your hand and gently start to incorporate it into the tips of the hair. When you start, less is better, so start small and add more. If it is not a highly stylized spike, I would recommend only going about half way up the strand with the glue. Once you have the glue part set, spray it a bit with hairspray and wait for it to set. After the spike has properly set, move on to the next one. For the bigger spike, such as the one on top of Souma’s head, I used fabric glue up the whole piece. When it comes to big spikes, take your time and finesse the hair. It can be difficult, but just keep working the hair with the glue. Once again, start with less and work your way up to more glue. Continue this will all of the other spikes you need to style, then finish styling. This wig was completely spiked so I continued this process for the whole wig.

And then you are done! If you have any questions or comments please let me know! I would also love to see what you guys made. Thanks for reading!
